Pavement Design and Analysis

Description

This course covers the structural and functional design of asphalt/concrete pavement structures for highway. The application of current pavement design practices and procedures are presented as well as concepts and principles in the structural design of pavements for highways are included. It covers the analysis, behavior, performance, and structural design of pavement systems. Design considerations include selection of materials, environmental factors, traffic loading, maintenance and rehabilitation. Structural design examines the direct influence of the vehicles on material and thickness requirements to provide a pavement with anticipated long-lasting performance. The functional design examines the user aspects, which are primarily smoothness (International Roughness Index, IRI) and safety (pavement macro-texture) considerations.

Training topics to be covered include:

• Introduction
• Traffic analysis
• Subgrade and base materials
• Overview of asphalt and concrete materials
• Pavement distresses
• Pavement responses to load and relationship to design
• Asphalt and rigid pavement design approaches
• AASHTO 1993 flexible and concrete pavement design procedures
• Overview of Pavement-ME design procedure for flexible and concrete pavements

Outcomes

Upon the completion of this training, participants will be able to:

• Differentiate between flexible, rigid, and composite pavements based on engineering properties and pavement response
• Understand surface distresses for different pavement types
• Compute traffic analysis for the purpose of pavement design
• Design pavement structure, both asphalt and concrete, using AASHTO 1993
• Calculate pavement responses using software and tools
• Analyze the input parameters for the design of pavements
• Assess the impact of environmental factors on pavement performance

Methodology

During the training, the instructor presents a logical sequence of topics and activities allowing participants to demonstrate their experience, knowledge and skills. Participatory and engaging training sessions will be conducted. Training participants will be requested to work in groups on a specific topic and present to virtual class. The training delivery activities include lectures, exercises, group discussions, instructor-led example problem sets and lively discussions. The training also includes demonstration of software packages and tools for traffic data analysis and pavement design.

Target Student

The target audience for this training consists of engineering professionals working in pavement design, material testing, traffic analysis and maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements.
