Course description
The course “Internet Governance and Law “aims to familiarize students with the Internet as a concept that underpins many topical issues that legal frameworks around the world are currently challenged with. The endeavor is to educate the students about the rules, policies, standards and practices that coordinate and shape global cyberspace. This course illustrates the importance of Internet governance in this dynamic world with its different types, issues and future of Internet governance and law in any country. In this course, the students will be able to understand the basic concepts of Internet, its services, search engines and learn how internet connectivity takes place. In this course, the students will be guided on internet growth and evaluate the intervention of internet on community and their communications, collaborations and computations. It addresses opinions and theories primarily arising out of law, computer science and governance, but also includes references to society, communication and media studies. The course also highlights the basic provisions of internet law, legal systems and principle of legal rights and shares information about the concept of disputes in public and private sectors via internet and law.
Course outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Learn the internet and applications where governance is needed
• Learn website, web application, web services, web browsers , and search engines
• Understand mailing systems, social media and impact/addiction of social media services such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
• Understand digitalization around the world and society through different generations of web
• Learn intervention of virtual reality, Internet governance, its development and applications
• Learn roles of private sector, civil societies and Internet Governance Form (IGF)
• Understand why globalized legal system is needed, in reference to “cybercrime” and “cyberwar”
• Learn cyber force, cyber volunteers, international disputes and local laws
• Learn violations of intellectual property rights over internet, jurisdiction challenges, role of law enforcement agency, human rights in cyber world and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
• Understand internet intermediaries, crypto currency and Blockchain
